This new 4 year course series is designed for grades K-3. Even though Kaden is much older then this, his artistic ability fits perfectly in this range. You could start out with volume 1 or pick up wherever you would like. Here you can find an intro video and a helpful comparison guide for all of the different volumes.
Here is a list of the Volumes within the Series-
Volume 1: Art for Children, Building a Visual Vocabulary
Volume 2: Art of the Ancients
Volume 3: Art of the Middle Ages
Volume 4: Artists that Shaped the Italian Renaissance
Volume 5: Art of the Northern Countries, Renaissance to Realism
Volume 6: Art of the Impressionists
Volume 7: Art of the Modern Age
Volume 8: Art in America
Each volume is a vibrant hardbound cover with a plastic pouch attached to the inside cover that stores your Blu-Ray and DVD. I can't tell you enough how helpful that alone is in keeping the discs and book together in one place. :) We dived in right from the start. Watching a video on the television sometimes with Mahala, but mostly just us. We would discuss the video and then open the book and read the coordinating pages. Looking at the art samples was something he enjoyed and even looking up other pieces online together.
With each project I let him lead, hence the apple danish he decided to draw along with his apple. :) He helped gather supplies, read instructions and created.
Here Kaden was learning about light and shade, highlights and shadows. He decided to practice on an eraser. It was interesting to see him trying to hold the pencil in a way to make shadows.
Once again I have enjoyed using another volume in this series. I think it is so important for children to get creative, especially kids with special needs like Kaden. He complains and criticizes every project in the beginning because that's just what he does. But, once he gets started the self confidence grows and you can tell he feels proud of what he made.
No matter if you homeschool or not, I think any household could benefit from a set of these books. The lessons are short and easy to complete. The supplies are simple and not hard to find and the quality of the projects will be treasured for years to come.
