Seventh Grade Literature Guide Set - Memoria Press ~ REVIEW

As a big reading family, you can always find us with a book in our hands.  We used to do more read alouds as a family, but as the kiddos have grown up, moved out and it's now just Kaden and I... he tends to read alone more.  That said I do like to try to have a book going that we can read together a few times a week, or at least one we discus.  One of the ways we slip this time together in our schedule is by using the Seventh Grade Literature Guide Set from Memoria Press.

We have loved using their products for years and recently they sent us a complete Literature set with both the Student Study Guides and Teacher Guides.

Our Set included
  • Anne of Green Gables
  • The Hobbit
  • Trojan War
  • Bronze Bow

Here is a short description...before you read, review any Vocabulary Words.  Review the Plot, Characters, Settings and so forth.  You should go over the Reading Notes and read over the upcoming questions.  I LOVE that, we do that anyway when we can.  When we read we even predict what may happen and then afterwards compare how close we were to what really happened.  By going over the questions ahead of time, your Kiddos can read purposefully and answering the questions will be a breeze. Kaden and I 100% did all the pre-reading work and I saw 100% increase in his confidence in completing the work.  Having a child on the Autism Spectrum comes with many challenges.  Having a plan built into the guides like this pre-reading activities minimizes "test" anxiety.  Because they know what questions are coming.  Kaden would even keep out his Student Guide while he was reading most days and fill in as he went along.  I know he will not get distracted, but if your Kiddo gets easily distracted keeping their Guide open may not be the best thing to do.

Ok, So after reading you are instructed to go back through the vocabulary, answer the comprehension and discussion questions and then the fun Enrichment portion.  It's fun because it's filled with out of the box activities like... Creating your own creatures with habitats, developing a sword, learning the Runic alphabet and penmanship practice.
Every few chapters there is a Quiz or Exam, we did most of this orally, Kaden loved labeling the maps and that the questions were straightforward.  There was comprehension questions, multiple choice, fill in the blank, composition questions or essays and vocabulary.  So, you can see it covers every type of learner.

Will we continue using Memoria Press and these Guides?   Most definitely, we are beyond excited to dive into The Bronze Bow, which was Skylar's favorite book and Ann will always have a spot in my heart, so we will hit that one after the Holidays this year.  If you are looking for a way to incorporate Literature in your homeschool without having to do a ton of research, planning and begging, this is perfect.  The lessons are simple, can be done independently and spark deep contemplation and discussions.  I also love the bits of copy work and creative activities throughout the guide.  I wasn't sure how well I would like these older grades as the books evolve away from younger reads, but I was surprised and pleased they were just as engaging and enjoyable to work through.  And these are perfect for our move in a few weeks and RV living.  All we need is our Kindle and Study Guide....Yes!
