Once again I am blessed to have a new homeschool unit study from Home School in the Woods. This time Kaden and I get to take an adventure back in time to learn all about Ancient Greece with a Project Passport World History Studies from Home School in the Woods. This is by far my favorite way to learn History besides reading real books. We have used many products from them throughout our homeschool journey, but I love the Project Passport studies the most. And yes, there is a ton of printing involved, which I normally dislike, but it's so worth it to have this kind of learning adventure.
The whole idea behind the Unit Study or concept is that you are traveling back through to a time in History of your choice, for us this time it's Ancient Greece. As you make 25 different pit stops along your journey you get to experience History in a very hands on approach. Activities like cooking projects, crafts and games to do along the way. You will also make a scrapbook, snapshot timeline, several souvenirs, postcards and a newspaper. We received all our info in a digital download, that was super simple and easy to understand. Click Start and go from there. I appreciate all the instructions included because there is just so much to do. If this is your first passport I would go in order and read all the helps and set up so there is no confusion.
The main reason why this study is so magical to us is because while your kiddos are at each stop they will listen or read the lesson for the day and participate in several different activities. This is the bread and butter, for us we need to have our hands busy creating to truly make the facts stick. With such a variety of activities you are sure to find something for everyone to enjoy. Obviously not only are they more interested in the topic, but they are going to be more engaged in the whole learning process and actually know what it is that they are supposed to be learning. I've never been a big fan on the "learn all the right answers for the upcoming test to only forget about it right after" routine.
Unlike some of the Passports we have used before we decided since it's the summer we would skip around instead of go straight through. Kaden found so many activities that he wanted to do. I think this one was such a hit because he truly loves all things Greek, from the food and Mythology to the art style during that time like, pottery. We did each stop the same, together taking turns reading and then completing the activities. I did do most of the cutting while he read. Some of his favorite activities this time was learning about the Greek way of dressing. A male traveler and a Greek Warrior were the outfits he liked the best. The women's clothing was pretty interesting too. We learned about the doric peplos the iconic chiton.....not too shabby looking. :)
Of course Kaden would want to eat some Greek food, so the Greece-y Spoon was a huge hit. We also enjoyed the Stories of Greek Heroes and learning about constellations. I also just have to say they list tons of resources to use along with this study. We found many of the suggested reading at the library and having it right there in black and white made our trip to the library supper easy because we knew what to look for. The constellation pictures were wonderful for Kaden to practice his motor skills. I found it much easier for him to use paint then a pencil for projects like these.
The final fun activity I was going to share about that we loved as a family was the Greek Life Game. Yes, with just a few printed pages we had a cool game that is similar to the Game of Life. To the right I tried to get a good picture, but we were just laughing too hard. It was a lot of fun playing and putting it together. Kaden and I both painted the coins, board and other pieces. We decided to use little baggies and to store the board with the baggies in a clear plastic pouch. We plan to even bring it this weekend on our camping trip Kaden likes it so much.
I highly recommend any of the Project Passport Studies to any Family wanting to come together and learn more about these different time periods. This is a hands on program, you can't just say here go print this out and work quietly on this. This program does require some parent child team work....but that's part of the FUN! There is a lot of printing, but it's worth it and if you are like me I just print off what I need for the week. I have only one more that I need to get in this series and I'm soooooo looking forward to the Newest Project Passport: Ancient Rome. You can also now get the Complete Project Passport Bundle now too!
