The Master and His Apprentices ~ REVIEW

http://schoolhousereviewcrew.com/wp-content/uploads/themasterandhisapprentices.jpg
This was one of those Reviews that I signed up for and then held my breath until I found out I was assigned it.  The reason is, well Art and History are kind of my jam right now.  Therefor it is also my kid's jam at the moment too.  Mahala has officially graduated high school as of 2 weeks ago, but I really wanted her to experience History through Art and I felt this curriculum could help her achieve that along with an extra credit for her transcripts.  The product I'm talking about is the Digital Edition of the Textbook and Teacher Guide of The Master and His Apprentices: Art History from a Christian Perspective from The Master and His Apprentices. Let me tell you a little about it and why Mahala ans I are looking forward to the next few months.

When I opened my downloaded links I was anxious to get started.  Mahala put the student book on her tablet and I added the teachers guide to my computer and cellphone.  I scrolled through the teachers guide and totally appreciated the special note and explanations on how to use the program in the class or at home.  It is so nice to have things laid out and then you can simplify, add or change what you want to make it easier for you and your student.  This program is for the whole year or you can shorten it up like we are.  We are just spending more time on it, so Mahala can get all the good stuff before college next Spring.  After the tremendous sample syllabus that has everything mapped out for you and divided for a whole year of ease is a helpful Terms Section for describing Art.  This was very helpful as we were going through the course because it allowed us to understand more clearly the material...not to mention we feel like experts now looking at Artwork. :) The rest of the guide is basically info for the 4 Papers that are due throughout the program, all of the weekly discussion questions and exams along with the answers.  Also, I found several tips and reminders that helped me stay on-top of what was needed for the upcoming classes and when things would be covered.

The Master and His Apprentices covers a wide range of  periods of Art including supportive topics regarding the time period.  I appreciate that this is a very family friendly curriculum that is written from a Christian perspective, you don't see that normally.  If you are worried about nudity, there is none so no worries.  Even though this is geared for older students, Kaden who is 11 had no problem understanding and discussing some of the questions along with Mahala.

The study starts out exploring Art with Creation and then you journey through the Ancient Cultures- Egyptian, Aegean, the Early Greeks, Etruscan and Romans, the Renaissance period and on to modern contemporary Art of today.  All this in 19 chapters with over 600 full color pictures of Art, architecture, pictures, maps and artifacts.  Here, take a look at the chapters ~

We decided that 3 days a week we would start and finish when we were tired.  This worked well for us as it's summer and there is a lot going on.  Her and I would take turns reading the material and then answered the questions out loud together.  I was expecting fill in the blank type questions or more facts and dates/period driven questions.  I was pleasantly surprised and relieved that they were more open ended and thought provoking questions and less objective.  This really took any pressure off and actually caused us to enjoy what we were learning.  This curriculum packs in Geography, Religion, Humanities, History and even some Science here and there.  I would have loved this years ago to do with my oldest.  And Scripture all throughout the lessons really reminds us where to cast our amazement and adoration.
Creation was lovely to go deeper into then I ever though imaginable.  We dove into light, re-observed the water cycle, and found true appreciation for all 6 days.  Some of our other favorite things we read about was the original wonders of the world, I knew about several like the Hanging Gardens and Pyramids of Giza, but never knew about the Lighthouse of Alexandria.  Also, the chapter on Noah's Ark was fantastic and equally neat to learn about was the stamp and cylinder seals.  I may have a new budding collection starting up.  Learning how these skilled seal Artists came from generations filled with long lines re-leaving the elders as they aged and could no longer use their sacred tools.
Another favorite was learning about the Tabernacle.  Can I admit here that I truly didn't know much about the expansiveness of it until I read this chapter?
In chapter 4 we walked down memory lane as we brushed out the cobwebs on all things Egypt.  We learned about the different kinds of pyramids and what exactly goes in them, how and why the were robbed and held a nice debate on whether we thought the pyramid builders were Artisans or Slaves.  And the pictures in the King Tut and Ramses sections were outstanding.  Seeing the enormity of these statues and the intricate details given to their jewelry, temples and burial masks was interesting.
We made it to Chapter 6 so far, which is Greece and we are all eyeing the beautiful mosaics and admiring Zeus' huge hobbit feet.  We are heading out on a camping trip this weekend, but are planning on picking right back up and finishing the whole book.  We have enjoyed everything we have learned so far and look forward to the rest.  If you are looking for a visual timeline of both Biblical and World events in one study this is for you.  If you would like an independent program for your high school student to get credit for their transcripts this is also for you.  This is also for the family looking at spending a little study time together or that adult who wants to make those connections between Art and the Biblical timeline possible.
