Surviving the Day After Halloween

The day after Halloween may find you legs up ready to give in when your dealing with little candy monsters on a sugar high.  That's ok I have a few tips to deal with the Halloween Hangover.  First off we start with some yummy oatmeal, lots of water and our supplements.  I like to start their day with warm bellies, then we tend to get out for some much needed sunshine and fresh air.

We tend to keep things low key.  Usually this means lots of reading and time for hobbies like carving, knitting, beading or painting.
Kaden tends to read and this Halloween he has been hooked on the new book written by Allan Woodrow, The Curse of the Werepenguin from Penguin Random House. Middle Grade (8-12) You can read about this new book down bellow.

Once I have the kids up and outside or doing their thing of choice I put together a charcuterie board or bento for them to eat on while we play games or what a movie.  I believe getting plenty of water and protein in them helps decrease the sugar urge and the damage to their gut isn't as bad as having free range candy graze all day.

So, what to do with all that candy.  I like to make leftover candy bark.  I let them pick out their absolute favorites and then take whatever is left and pair it with some pretzels and nuts....you have to have a good balance between sweet and salty.  All you need additionally is some parchment paper, a baking tray and about a pound or so of bittersweet chocolate.

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and chop up any candy bars or cookies.
  2. Place the chopped bittersweet chocolate in a medium bowl and microwave in 30-second increments, stirring after each, until completely melted and smooth.  Pour the chocolate onto the baking sheet and, using spatula to spread into a thin layer (about ¼-inch thick).  Sprinkle the melted chocolate with the chopped candy bars, peanut butter cups, M&M's and any nuts or pretzels. Lightly press to make sure the candy is into the melted chocolate.  Refrigerate for about 30 minutes.
  3. Cut/break the bark into irregular pieces and serve. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

About the book..... and don't forget to check out all of the other fun spooky books down below too.......

    The Curse of the Werepenguin
All orphan Bolt Wattle has ever wanted was to find his true family. When a mysterious baron in far-off Brugaria sends for Bolt, he wonders if he's getting closer to finding his long-lost parents. But Baron Chordata appears to be a twelve-year-old boy who wears tuxedos all the time, shouts at everyone, and forbids Bolt from asking questions. Things couldn't get any worse . . . until midnight, when the Baron bites Bolt and turns him into a half boy, half penguin. Then things really couldn't get worse-- nope, wait, they get a lot worse. With the help and hindrance of a plucky girl who just might be the world's greatest bandit, a whale cult led by a man whose weapon is a stale loaf of French bread, and a sinister but friendly fortune-teller who can't stop cackling, Bolt's on a quest to reverse the curse, return to human form, and stop the Baron from taking over the country of Brugaria with his army of mind-controlled penguins in what might be the weirdest--and funniest--middle-grade novel you've ever read.
