Memoria Press ~ Review

I have the pleasure of sharing another amazing product from Memoria Press.  Kaden was surprisingly delighted to start using their Poetry for the Grammar Stage Set.

I wasn't sure how he would react to a structured curriculum regarding Poetry.  Right now once or twice a week we will read poetry and discuss, but nothing more formal.  Poetry for the Grammar Stage Set is a three-book set that contains a Teacher Guide, Student Guide and Anthology.  The set includes 32 poems that are both engaging and peppered with a few of our classic favorites.  By paring the readings with the Student Guide your kiddo will be challenged to think critically bout the piece and be able to discuss and analyze each of the poems.

The publisher, Memoria Press is a family-ran publishing company which I love to be able to support and promote.  Over the years, time and time again we have enjoyed using their products.  They produce simple and easy-to-use classical Christian education materials for home and private schools. Both the products and customer service has been exemplary.

Kaden and I would begin each lesson with reading the poem out loud and then he would copy the poem in the space provided along with an illustration.  He sometimes didn't want to draw, but once we got started on the questions he would doodle and come up with illustrations.  I liked him being encouraged to be creative and work on his handwriting.  Normally, he would go ahead and complete the vocabulary section and analyze the structure of the poem and style.

The next day I would have him reread the poem to himself and have him go through all of the comprehension questions.  Some days there were more questions and we may spread them out, especially for some of the longer poems or more involved pieces.
I would check the answers along the way since I was right there with him while doing the lessons.  The Teacher Guide was helpful and easy to use.  There was a very brief appendix that had glossary words, examples and the history of  Paul Revere's Ride.

So, what did we think?  We loved it, we truly enjoyed the poems included.  The conversations we had were wonderful and I could see his imagination sparked right before my eyes.  I know poetry may not be for everyone, but it's like classical music, it moves you differently.  I feel that poetry opens a part of your mind we sometimes forget we have.  Kaden seems to have a better school day when we start off with a little poetry. :)
