The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls~ REVIEW

I'm so careful what my children read...it's important to me that they not only read and understand the Bible, but that what they read for school and in their personal time is worth reading.  Is it going to uplift, inspire and encourage them as they grow into young adults?  We read a lot in our home and I'm so pleased to have found this Brand New Series from WorthyKids/Ideas called The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls.  We received Book one and two, The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls: The Beginning (Book 1) and The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls: Race to the Ark (Book 2).

Kaden and I decided to read together out-loud, the age recommendation is 6-9.  They both were very easy reads, well written and was packed with adventure and excitement that I as a parent truly enjoyed reading them both.  I also thought the black and white artwork throughout the books were terrific.  Kaden took the time to point out the little things that were eye catching to him.  Like Uncle Solomon's compass, the animals and the characters.

Let's take a peek at some of each of the stories......

In the 1st Book the kids seem a little hesitant to spend a whole month with their Great-Uncle Solomon.  Their Great-Uncle Shared the legend of the hidden scrolls.  He told the kids that he couldn't open the scrolls because he wasn't the chosen one and of course Peter wanted to find out if he was the chosen one, how cool would that be?
Peter thought the library was just filled with old books but Hank started barking at a book that had a lion on it, maybe it was the lion that would prove if he was the chosen.  The bookshelf moved and behind it was all of these scrolls and then all of a sudden the library was gone and it was dark.
And then a big voice said let there be light and there was light and then the big voice said it is good. Without giving too much more away basically they go to the very beginning....when God created the heavens and the earth.   As they go through each of the days of creation, luckily the Angel Michael is there to help the children.  He gives them 3 rules and explains that they have seven days to translate what the scroll says... that is written in Hebrew.  He also tells them to pay attention to the clues, to always trust God and remember what they've been taught.

I so Loved the part when they watch the sunset together all three of them and also how the book explained about Satan.  That he is the greatest enemy and he can be anywhere and look like anything.  When Peter asked how they would know him if they ever saw him and Michael said you will know him by his lies, that he will try to trick you with lies and turn you against God.

They were still searching for clues when eventually they ran into the sly snake.  Let me just say things got pretty ugly but thanks to Mary and her karate moves they put up a fight until the Angel Michael came as they cried out for help.  With his flaming sword he struck the snake's head.  Pretty neat scene, Kaden was paying attention, that's for sure.

Once the seventh day came Michael reminded the kids that they needed to figure out the last word.  To their surprise after Peter came up with it the scroll shook,  the seal fell off and a beautiful medallion of a tree was left.  And with that they were swept away and back in the library where they met their Great-Uncle, who was wondering what all the noise was.  After finding out that they were basically only gone for a few hours and not 7 days they had an amazing time sitting and talking with the Great-Uncle Solomon and telling him all about their adventure during the creation.

The next Book finds the kids on a rainy day, bored looking for something to do and they go into their Great-Uncles library,   In there Mary finds what she believe is his archeology tools.  They also find maps and a hand written journal.  As they start reading through it they recognize the legend of the hidden screws is written in it.  And before you know it, I'm sure you can guess they were back on another adventure.  This time they found themselves looking down on an ancient civilization with a towering pyramid standing tall in the middle.

Right off the bat they found a little trouble while trying to find food in the market and almost lost their Great-Uncle's bag and their dog Hank.  But, once again the Angel Michael was there to be able to lend them a helping hand and to remind them that God is always with them.

I loved the realness when Peter and Mary were settling in for the first night and Peter said to her that he was worried about their safety and she reminded them about how God will take care of them.  This is such a great reminder for our children and ourselves.  The next day they wake up and they begin their adventure while using their compose they explore and find animal tracks that lead them to the Ark where they meet Shem.  As they continue to hunt for clues to read the scroll they help Noah and his family work on the Ark and get the animals ready for the flood.

Kaden and I shared a great conversation over the part where Peter and Mary reminisce about the Garden of Eden.   Noah told the kids that the world was filled with violence, sickness, hate and pain.   God did not create it to be this way, He plans to wash it clean with the flood and start over again.  Another one of the favorite parts of this specific book is the little journal writing that Peter does, talking about the animals, his day and experiences, even Mary's allergies.
Finally in order to keep all the animals safe they needed to go into town and get some hinges. Mary and Peter go because they don't want to risk any of Noah's family being captured by the Dark
Ruler.  While gone they run into somebody that they had had problems with earlier in the story that ended up capturing them and taken to the Dark Ruler.  We all know who the Dark Ruler is and after a little interrogation he asks Peter if he remembers him.  He told him he looked different than last time they met and then Peter realized it was Satan....crazy on the seat of your chair.

So, I know you want to hear more, but you will just need to read them to find out the rest.  I also wanted to mention that at the end of each of the books you will find a little place where it goes through Bible passages to learn more about the people, places and events you just read about in the story.  Super cool books, I wish they would have been around when my 2 oldest were younger, but at least Kaden has them, I plan to continue the series for Kaden and get them also for my young nieces.  They would enjoy these too.  These would make great Christmas gifts, birthday gifts and additions to anyone's library with or without "Secret Scrolls".
