Northwest Treasures ~ REVIEW

I remember teaching about dinosaurs to my 2 older kiddos just randomly.  No real lesson or real substance.  Along comes Kaden though with a million and one questions.  Questions I had never even given much thought to.  For the time being doing a little research helped quench some of those questions.  Recently, though we were given the opportunity to watch the introductory video Taking the Mystery Out of Geology and to take the Dinosaurs and the Bible course from Northwest Treasures

This 6 part online course was watched with a free Vimeo account and was super easy to set up and watch.  Each video is about 20 minutes long and there are worksheets with answers and exams available to download.  This series of videos is designed to answer some questions through actual findings geologically and with Scripture about dinosaurs and their existence.

Taking the Mystery Out of Geology.  This is a single episode that is about 20 minutes long.  This course is intended to help you prepare for further Sciences that your child will be exposed to evolutionary thinking.  Geology is the foundation of everything backed by Genesis 1:1. The video goes through different Philosophies like Uniformitarianism, evolutionism and creationism.  Very eye opening information to see how some people have completely tried to nudge God completely out of the creation picture.  I learned a lot just in this introductory video.  It's intended for grades 5-Adult.

Now onto the course we completed, I just want to give a few highlights for each of the 6 videos.  We did all of the questions out loud together.
Video 1~ We learned from Mr. Nurre about where the word dinosaur came from.  We also learned about the discovery of the first fossils and for the first time Kaden was introduced to  Charles Darwin and his thoughts of evolution.  That last thing sparked a very long conversation. :)

Video 2~  This video talks about Classification and the possible inaccurate method used today to classify dinosaurs.  Comparing the two approaches was very interesting, secular vs Biblical.

Video 3~ Here you learn about the Great Dinosaur Rush.  Have you ever heard of that before?  I had not and Kaden was shocked to hear about it, we even did some more digging online to learn more.  This happened in the mid-to-late 1800s when a huge number of dinosaur bones were discovered.  This period of time was filled with intense, ruthlessly competitive fossil hunting.  Can we say Money!!!  It was also known as Bone War.

Video 4~ Here we learned about the secular and Biblical accounts of the dinosaur extinction.

Video 5~ And now the Ice Age and all that goes with explaining the when, how and why.  I remember when Kaden watched the movie Ice Age he asked if this happened before or after the flood.  There has always been a natural curiosity and desire to understand the truth in our kiddos.  This was a great video to watch with him.

Video 6~  This one is all about fossils, how they are used, classified and how finding soft tissue throws out the theory that dinosaur fossils go back millions of years.

So what did I think?  I enjoyed going through this series with Kaden.  I think it would be perfect for the summer or to even jump start your new school year.  We watched 2-3 videos a week, along with questions and a few extra activities and crafts.  Overall a fun educational experience.  Make sure you Connect with Northwest Treasures on Pinterest and Facebook today!
