We just love books over here and since it's the beginning of a new school year I have been adding to our library. Recently we were able to read the first book in a new series called, Rescue Me! What Superheroes Can Teach Us About the Power of Faith from The Captain Sun Adventures. I thought this series would be super neat because it's part comic book and part devotional. How awesome to pair these two together and you can read out loud to younger children or your independent readers can read and then discuss the devotions after reading it with you.
There is a darkness in Capital City and Captain Sun the superhero that was sent to Earth to fight oppression, defend the weak and to uphold justice. It's a seamless story weaved between a comic book action packed story and the Biblical stories behind each lesson learned within these 8 chapters. The chapters are short as the book is just over 30 pages. But, they pack a real punch and I found it just as enjoyable to read as Kaden did. After each chapter there is a wonderful devotion in the style of a newspaper article. This was really cool Kaden said! He also enjoyed the Questions to Think About at the end of the book.
Kaden read through the whole book in one sitting and then later that weekend I read it along with him and we went over the devotionals. That next week or so I had him journal the answers to the questions in the back of the book. I wanted to drag out this experience for as long as I could because the points that it made was really important. With all the influences out there attacking our kids on a daily basis I think any time you can put something like this in front of them it's a necessity. I would highly recommend this new series if your child enjoys comics or to supplement your devotional time. This would be a welcomed surprise.
