Marigold Bakes a Cake

I have the cutest sweetest most amazing children's book to share with you this weekend.  It's called Marigold Bakes a Cake by Mike Malbrough.  I don't know about you, but we like sweets over here, homemade cakes and pastries are the best.  Over the years we have baked many many goodies and Kaden came up with something special I'll share after a quick introduction of this book that needs to be on your bookshelf this week.

First off, I love the illustrations, they are just as important as the story when it comes to children's books.  Of course I love it so much because it's done in vibrant watercolors.  Marigold is very much like Kaden, he likes everything in it's place, organized and planned out.  He also loved baking so much he designated Mondays as his baking day.  Kaden loves being in the kitchen all the time, especially when we are baking.  The main difference other then the fact that Kaden is a boy and Marigold happens to be a cat is that Kaden likes baking with his Sister and I and Marigold likes to be alone.

Baking Time!!!

After Marigold finds his snazziest recipe he begins carefully baking...step by step, nothing left unmeasured precisely I'm sure.  But, then a visitor shows up, and then another and another and this makes him frazzled.  He tried to calm down, but it was too much for him and he went out for a walk.  I don't want to spoil the story, but a conclusion happened that gave Kaden many belly laughs and plenty to talk about.  I asked Kaden what he liked best about the story and he said he loved how the Author rhymed the words together before each new visitor showed up.  And the shaved chocolate ribbons look delicious he said while licking his lips. :)  Another favorite of both of ours is the inside cover in the front and back of the book; showcases some of Marigold's and his Visitor's cakes....no doubt Marigold is a Baking Master.

No doubt this is one of our favorite children's books and I plan to keep it in our Family Library for visiting children and future grand kids to enjoy for many many years.

Mike Malbrough was a freelance graphic designer, comic book artist, performer and teacher with a career spanning two decades before beginning his career as a picture book author-illustrator. Yummmmmmy!
So Pretty Blue and White....

Like I said we had a little surprise in our kitchen the other day, Kaden decided to prank his Sister.  So we made some lovely cake pops except one was extra Special.  It was a tomato from Kaden's garden.  Back around Christmas she had done something similar with a brussels sprout disguised as a peanut butter chocolate ball.  When Kaden presented Mahala with her cake pop she knew right away something wasn't right, but played along anyway.  She thought it was so hilarious.  Maybe we should pass the idea along to Marigold. ;)
The Special Cake Pop

Delicious??
