Guess what? I have a new addition to our Heroes of History series from YWAM Publishing, we received the book on Thomas Edison. I have been thrilled with every single book we have ever read from them. We have books from their Christian Heroes: Then and Now series too. We have always enjoyed unit study lessons and whenever we can add real living books and Biographies we jump at the chance.
What I love about these books and study
guides is the ability to really make these our own. Having a child on
the spectrum I am used to customizing and supplementing our curriculum.
The study guides are filled with comprehension questions,
geography/maps, research topics, timeline, hands-on projects, art,
writing and more
included in these study guides.
was easy to
retrieve digitally, it was simple and easy to follow along while reading
the book and most importantly for me it was well organized and the
layout was neat. I thought it was great that there is a thorough
explanation of how to use the Guide in a Classroom, Group or Homeschool
setting. The needs and opportunities for the children in these three
settings are all so different. So, it was nice to see that they were
each given great thought on how to successfully use this guide and book.
So, let's talk about the book...we have studied many articles and books on Thomas Edison. This book takes you all the way back to his curious childhood days. We learned that he was called by a nickname from his middle name Alva. We had not heard that before, so that was interesting. Kaden's favorite thing though was learning about Morse Code. We played around with that for days.
Another interesting thing was a specific part in the book when he needed to cash a check at the bank. He had always been paid in cash, so this was new to him. The secretary helped him sign the back and cash it. Kaden looked at me and asked me, "did they not just have direct deposit back then?" We got a huge laugh from that one. :)
I don't want to ruin the reading experience for you, but I will say we were touched to read his experiences and trials that gave him the strength to endure and literally surpass what others thought was his potential growing up. Very encouraging to read and makes me love this series that much more.
I'm sure you have heard of the Action Bible by David C Cook. Recently we received his new book, The Action Bible Anytime Devotion 90 Ways to Help Kids Connect with God Anytime, Anywhere,
illustrated by Sergio Cariello, Brazilian comic book artist. This amazing book offers our kiddos specific ways to not only connect with our God, but how to apply it to our lives every single day. I'm talking about how to have and implement courage, love, trust, hope, faith, kindness, service, and strength.
The Table of Contents makes it super easy to find a particular topic you may be
struggling with or wanting to learn more about by showing you the Title - Topic - Scripture. This book is recommended for kiddos in the 8-12 range, but I can see it used with even teenagers. Let me tell you how Kaden used it.

Most mornings he is up and waiting for breakfast at the table so this book has been a happy addition to his waiting on Mom routine. I would come downstairs and he would be reading. Besides the actual stories he said he enjoyed the life applications. He couldn't relate to all of them, but he was able to put the lesson deeper in his heart because of the extra bullet points at the end. They offered ideas on how to put what you just learned into action, prayer starters, situations to contemplate and writing exercises. One in particular that stood out during this day in time is an exercise that told Kaden to refocus our thoughts on God right away and pray when we find ourselves in a tough situation.

Kaden also said he liked that they were fairly short reads. Just a simple 2 page spread that made them easy to read. Daily he would read 2 or 3, so he has completely read all 90 of them and has actually continued by rereading them. I think we will need to get the NIV Action Study Bible for him ASAP. Just to completely share what each devotional consists of.... the 2 page spread is illustrated in a colorful
graphic novel style and begins with an Action Verse, the actual real-life situational story/devotional, the life applications that Kaden liked so much and then ends with a Take it Further section that gives additional scripture reading.
We read a lot of books, I mean a ton of them every month. But, sometimes it would be nice to linger over a book a little longer then zipping to the next one. That's where LitWits Kits from LitWits comes in at. We recently were given 4 kits to go along with 4 books we had that were on our list to read next. I was a little more excited then Kaden because he says he doesn't like fussy stuff like crafts. :) But, the show must go on folks....here we go.

Personally I like hands on activities and Kaden generally does too. I think there are times in a book when you can pick up little life lessons and character gems by immersing yourself in the literature your reading. Right now LitWits has almost 50 different kits to choose from that reaches the whole reading spectrum. These kits save the parent hours of searching online for activities and materials to go along with your current book. I'm talking about these fine gems right here:
I promised Kaden no more new Math programs for awhile. And literally two days later I find Thinkwell fall instantly in love with their 6th to 8th Grade Math and had to tell Kaden with a cupcake that he would be working on a new 6th Grade Math program. :)
I know that sounds bad, but we have tried so many over the years. But Thinkwell right off the bat checked off all the right boxes for us. Kaden has huge struggles with sensory input, so online programs tend to be too overwhelming for him.

Sometimes you just need a little encouragement, some hand holding and a hug during a long day. And most of those days I find myself here at home alone knee deep in laundry with Kaden melting down in another room. Instead of tumbling down a sad destructive rabbit hole I usually try and grab a cup of tea and read something spiritually healthy. These past several weeks I have been using the God's Mail Volume 3 written by Ron Hardin from God's Mail. This book has been a perfect mix of encouragement and inspiration. I love that this book hosts a collection of poems that touch on many struggles and issues we may face. And on the opposite page there is a list of scriptures from different Bible versions to go along with each poem.

So, here is what I thought..... I would not say these are average poems. To me these are spiritual correspondences between the Author and God. I do this every single day. I talk with him daily, his words and work show up in my art and personal writing that I keep tucked away for only my eyes to see. I flipped through this book and wasn't looking for beautifully written poems, but conversations, realizations and eradication of broken hearts, bodies and minds. And I could feel this connection between the Author and God....this is what spoke to me. That is what had me pulling out my own Bible and reading further into the message I received from the Author's message he received. I hope that makes sense. :)

I've read most of the book and I would make 2 suggestions. One would be to lose the art behind the writing. And the other thing would be to group the poems into categories in the table of contents so it's easier to find what you want or need to read quickly. Would I recommend this book? I would with the understanding that these are the Author's communications with God through poetry. The style is not typical. I would take a look down below at what other people said that reviewed this same book.

We just love reading and sometimes finding family friendly books that's also filled with exciting adventure is sometimes hard to find. Lucky for us, we found Mattie Richardson's Horses in History Series from Author Mattie Richardson/Appaloosy Books. One of the best things about her books we've realized is that you can learn a thing or two and not have to settle on a boring read. Her books caught our hearts in the first chapter. Let me share a little about each one of them.
Each story is set in early American history during various time periods. We get to experience it through the eyes of the horses in each book. This series is intended for ages 8-14, but even I was hooked from the beginning. Kaden loves horses, so this was an easy series to get him to read. He also liked that in the beginning of each book is a little section filled with new words you may see and their meanings.
The day after Halloween may find you legs up ready to give in when your dealing with little candy monsters on a sugar high. That's ok I have a few tips to deal with the Halloween Hangover. First off we start with some yummy oatmeal, lots of water and our supplements. I like to start their day with warm bellies, then we tend to get out for some much needed sunshine and fresh air.

We tend to keep things low key. Usually this means lots of reading and time for hobbies like carving, knitting, beading or painting.
Kaden tends to read and this Halloween he has been hooked on the new book written by Allan Woodrow, The Curse of the Werepenguin from Penguin Random House. Middle Grade (8-12) You can read about this new book down bellow.
I had never heard of it
before until a few years ago when our Family went through a crisis and
my world came to a crashing halt. That's when I first heard about Self
Care. I learned that it's true what the flight attendant always tells
you at the beginning of your flight. If you don't put the oxygen max on
yourself first you wont be able to help your traveling partner beside
you that's gasping for breath.

Every
single day I make a point to practice Self Care. I have this bag I put
together filled with lotions, a candle, nail polishes, books, journals,
pens, candies, cards with affirmations on them, pictures of Family and I
have a list of things to do for myself. On that list I have
meditation, walking, art, writing, facials, hair masks, soak my feet,
read, watch a movie alone with Pop Corn, 5-10 minutes of intentional
deep breathing, take a bath with essential oils, make up a scrub or oil
combination, make a cup of tea or coffee and drink it outside. There
are so many things that you can add to your special list. I usually
take one to two times out of my day to do one of the things mentioned
above.
Some days it may be just lighting a candle, clicking on Spotify
and enjoying my morning shower with my favorite podcast playing or drinking my tea outside while deep
breathing....the point is to take time for yourself and stop putting
everyone's needs before your own. Especially if you are a parent to special needs children or have underlying health issues. For me it's my Lupus and mental wellness that needs protecting while we ride this parenting autism roller-coaster with Kaden. I know if I'm not right with myself, I'm
not going to be able to be there mentally and emotionally.

Take some
time for yourself this next week and watch the difference it makes.Sheilahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16088648997897145149noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3234546235408939294.post-7799375988777500242019-10-24T11:03:00.002-07:002019-10-24T13:29:22.574-07:00Online Math with Smartick ~ REVIEW
We have been using a new to us online Math program from Smartick. The Smartick program is an online subscription like no other I have seen before, by combining
math with reading comprehension, logic, and reasoning. The program adapts to your child's learning style and
customizes your child's needs regardless based on their performance. The program is geared toward children from ages 4-14 and takes only about 15 minutes
per day. Kaden received a 6 month free subscription and we have tried to use it consistently, but it's been a struggle do to a few of his limitations.
So school has been doing actually pretty awesome.... dare I say. Are we doing everything I want to do? Is Kaden begging for more and we are skipping hand in hand in some meadow? No, not even close. But, we are creating a routine....a routine people.

Here is what we worked on this week:

Hygiene

Math

Grammar

Life Skills

Reading

Hygiene has been so hard for him because he is extremely sensitive to tastes, touch and basically anything to do with his head so brushing teeth and showers are like pulling teeth. But, I have found a tooth paste that he actually can tolerate that is not filled with a bunch of crap. Burt's Bees fluoride free fruit fusion. We have tried so many it's insane. And bath time we have it down to every other day after lunch. Which is a game changer if we are out and about and we have to do it in the morning or heaven forbid the evenings. He has set rules in his mind that he finds painful to break and the struggle is evident when he has to work through a change in plans.
Math we have been using an online program and Singapore Math. Grammar is on Khan Academy right now ...he loves Khan for all subjects. Life Skills we did some baking, went to the grocery store where he helped pick out items from a list. He loves to compare prices on anything....I mean LOVES it! So, it's like a playground in there for him. As long as nobody makes eye contact with him or heaven forbid try and talk to him. He will straight up ghost you right there in isle 5, dropping whatever was in his hands. Yes, this has happened. Also for life skills we worked on making a schedule. I love getting his input and he loves sharing his opinion on things.
As for Reading, it's been hit or miss this week and that's weird. He reads all the time, but because we have a new schedule in place I noticed for him to find comfort he reads and rereads his special books, books he has read 10,000 times. I haven't pushed him to read anything different because obviously he needs these specific books and I can live with that.
So, that's the low down....I plan to do this every week because I want to track our progress better. And I will be adding more academics to his plate every single week.
As you know Kaden has Autism and Mahala has ADD, so our days are filled with instructions being told a million times, pure confusion, anxiety and meltdowns all before we leave the breakfast table. This has played a huge roll in how we operate our school time together. We modify almost every program we use and always allow extra time. Mahala has never really sought out any therapy or medication for her ADD, but Kaden has spent several years working through ABA therapy.
It's Fall and here in Northern California that means crisp, clear blue gorgeous days. We truly do have a fantastic Fall weather around here. And I'm taking it all in with opened windows, cozy afternoon teas, long socks and soups 2-3 nights a week. Love the sound of football humming in the background with wafts of simmering garlic and onions. I may be a little obsessed, but I love it. Now my Husband thinks otherwise....he comes behind me a closes windows when I'm not looking, hates soup, chowder or anything that you can eat in a bowl. But, hey that's ok because we compromise and make it work. I look at it this way. I open the windows while he is at work and he closes them for me when he gets home....easier on me! And when it comes to my love in a bowl...I add lot's of meat and something extra like a crusty bread or a salad with extras like marinated onions or artichokes.
What are some of your Fall favorites for your bowl?Sheilahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16088648997897145149noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3234546235408939294.post-34323596654904097362019-09-26T12:16:00.000-07:002019-09-30T12:16:49.216-07:00Fighting the Sickies....

Oh my gosh can the sickies please go to another home.....please, I beg of you. First Mahala and I had that crazy virus were you throw up and poo at the same time....yes TMI, but it's been my life. I was two minutes from a hospital stay. Then Thanh gets him quarterly man sickness. Yes, it's a real thing and it drives us all bananas. Then Kaden came down with a n ear infection in one ear. Thanh actually gets a cold and it home for almost a whole week from work. Then Thanh decided to share his cold/man sickness with Kaden and after dealing with them two for nearly two weeks I thought it was over, but Kaden got an ear infection in the other ear. And him and Dad are still coughing and spreading germs and Mahala and I are hanging onto our health by a single thread. Well, that and a bunch of oils, herbs and hand washing. I'm just done with the sickies!!!
So, yeah the beginning of school did not start off as planned....it sucked, but that's ok. Literally starting over next week... wish me luck!!!Sheilahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16088648997897145149noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3234546235408939294.post-85726725010264168282019-09-18T11:24:00.001-07:002019-09-18T11:39:39.119-07:00Online Times Alive ~ REVIEW

We have been doing a lot of traveling lately and this next review was perfect to take along with us on this last trip to Texas we had. Recently we were given a 6-month subscription to Online Times Alive from City Creek Press, Inc.. It is a program that provides online lessons with animated, funny, memorable songs and stories for kids to learn their times tables from. Where was this when I was in the 3rd grade?!?!

We also were able to review their Times Alive App, available for iOS 9.0 or above. We ended up using more then on the computer because of traveling. Also available is their "Lite" version you could check out if you have any concerns about the app running on your device.

There are cute coloring pages to help reinforce the songs and stories. And multiple ways to help keep those facts in their brain. Since it does offer audio and visual aspects it would work for all types of learners.
The songs are catchy and the animation is flashy and fun, unless you have a highly sensitive kid.

Throughout the program your child will be able to test their progress and retention by doing short reviews and quizzes. Even visual recall on the main number characters I thought was really cool and helpful. Afterwards, you do have the ability to repeat lessons if you need more time on a specific number. A progress report is available to the parent at any time, which will
show the child's progress through the lessons as well as their scores
and completion times for each quiz.

We used the App almost exclusively, Kaden is highly sensory sensitive and I found that having him use the App was tolerable and way more enjoyable. He was able to just shoot through the list of contents quickly while we drove and it not only entertained him, but helped reinforce his multiplication tables. This is a great way to add a little zip in your homeschool day and dare I say make Math silly and fun.

So thrilled to have the first official homeschool day of the year over. It's just a pain because I have all these expectations, memories of previous first days with the older kids and it just makes me sad. First day with Kaden is full of resistance, meltdowns and then sudden realization that it's basically nothing new and then a rush to get the basics done so he can excuse himself.

Gone are the days where I would make happy little signs and banners or come up with fun games, treat bags and themed lunches or snacks. None of this impresses Kaden, if anything it makes him crazy. So, we did 1/4 of the work we set out to accomplish, but we ended on a happy note....that is the goal here honestly. Keeping things Positive people is my main goal every single day....and that nobody gets hurt. :)Sheilahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16088648997897145149noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3234546235408939294.post-72291006658589252222019-09-13T17:40:00.000-07:002019-09-16T17:43:01.126-07:00Don't Sweat the Bucket List

Making my Fall Bucket List right now....there are a zillion things I want to do. I love this time of the year, the cooler weather, earlier sunsets, dinner from a bowl and snuggling with cozy blankets. Not to mention college football, all the fun holidays and sweet traditions that swirl around this time of the year.
So, what's on our Fall Bucket List....
Of course there are the usual things that are on everyone's list. But this year I added a game night because those have been few and far between lately. I added a flea market trip for Mahala since she loves doing things like that and for Kaden I added a few baking things. We are going to make bagels, banana bread, pie, baked apples and homemade pizzas. We are working on his life skills and cooking happens to be the main focus right now. I incorporated night walks, bike rides and park days to stay active along with movie marathons and snuggly afternoons.
Don't stress about these kinds of things, not everything has to be a Pinterest worthy moment...I mean look at my Fall Bucket List...so not worthy of the gram, but it will make for some amazing memories. Don't miss out on those because you are stuck on the perfection of what you think it should look like.Sheilahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16088648997897145149noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3234546235408939294.post-57806191622248554272019-09-13T11:03:00.000-07:002019-09-13T11:04:32.600-07:00Easy Grammar Systems ~ REVIEW

Grammar has always been something I have struggled teaching to Kaden. Usually the lessons are long, boring and dry he says. So, it was nice to find something a little different to try. Easy Grammar Systems has developed a unique program that offers short, easy to do lessons. We were able to use their Daily GRAMS: Grade 7 program. With this program Kaden has been able to sharpen some of his skills like capitalization, punctuation, sentence structure, alphabetizing, parts of speech and spelling rules. Even areas he is weaker in like analogies and letter writing skills.

Each Daily Gram only takes 5-10 minutes so we decided to do them right after breakfast, most of this review period we were rv traveling so it was perfect to take out on the picnic bench and work on. He was able to work independently for the most part, but I was available for any questions on instructions. I find he works best this way.

The way the lessons are laid out, the
student learns a new skill by repeating the practice over and over for a set amount of days. By doing so they practice the skill until mastery. Kaden was not to fond of this and wanted to rush through each skill to get to the next. Not sure if that's the Autism or just this generation talking. :)
Speaking of Autism, if you have sensory sensitive kids this will be perfect for them. Simple layouts and no distractions.... perfect for kids on the Spectrum.

So, what did we think? This book has 180 lessons, more then enough to get you through the school year. I think it's perfect for homeschooling families and even if you aren't. We will continue to use this program and look forward to using other grades in the future as well.

A few years ago Kaden and I was introduced to the Music Appreciation Book 1 Collection from Zeezok Publishing. We loved it and he has even carefully packed it away to bring with us in the RV full-time. Recently we were able to try their newest collection, the Music Appreciation Book 2: for the Middle Grades.

This included the activity book, beautiful readers, instructions for creating a journal, and how to access all the online component. It's geared for grades 5th-8th and should cover a full year of music for your kiddo. Since we are in the middle of moving and some other life changes it may take us longer, but that is just fine. This program is designed to work at your own pace. But, they do provide a convenient recommended schedule at the beginning of each section to use as a reference. Every 4-5 weeks you will get to learn about a new composer: Chopin, Schumann, Wagner, Stephen Foster, Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Edward McDowell.

Just like Book 1, Music Appreciation Book 2 is very easy to use and has everything you need to offer your child a beautiful Literature rich Music education. Kaden has never been really musically inclined as far as playing an instrument. So, I was surprised how he was always so willing and excited to read and work through the different activities each week. He loved all the different components, like geography, mapping, timelines, family trees, the culture and history activities, the biographys and even recipes. All of these things put together just makes the best learning experience for all types of learners.

I always say it's not about the flashiness of the product or packaging. Kids don't need or want gimmicks they want rich, full activities, thoughtful stories they can connect with and a space where they can connect the dots between the past, present and future.

This music curriculum has it all and it will appeal to auditory, hands on, visual learners, kids with special needs, like Kaden and everything in between. A new feature that makes this possible is the cool audio component provided with QR codes right from the student workbook and also in the beginning with the music list. All of the videos and links are also available on their website if you prefer to not use this feature. You can even purchase a lapbook or coloring book for kiddos who want even more of a hands on experience.

Basically, we started from the front of the book and slowly checked off one activity after another. Each day started with him reading independently or together with me. The activities take him longer to work through, so he has finish almost all of the readers, but still only on his 2nd composer as far as the activities go. For him the writing prompts and journaling is hard for him because of motor skills. But, I love them because it gets him creatively thinking and helps with his writing skills. He loves all the little "Tid Bits" of fun facts and info and has had fun with his Sister working on all the activities involving reading sheet music. We did all of the comprehension questions out loud together and even most of the quizzes like that too...it's just more enjoyable for both of us. :)

So, what did we think? We both loved it and look forward to finishing the rest of the student book. I felt like it was well rounded and incorporated so much learning from multiple subjects all in one place. He was thrilled that each day was a new activity that never seemed to get dry or boring. I also appreciated that even though I don't play an instrument and have had no musical education I can still open this musical door to Kaden. I believe Art and Music is so important for our children, offering Music to them with Zeezok Publishing is doable and affordable.
For Kaden this year I am keeping things super simple. Our must haves to get by though are all we need for success.

We use an erasable board for math, spelling, dictation, art and even doodling while waiting for dinner. Another must have is graph paper for math. Kaden is awful at keeping his numbers straight and it causes him so much frustration. With wide grid graph paper.... life is just better. Mechanical pencils are a must, because if his pencil is not sharper then sharp he can't focus on his work. And last but not least, fidget toys and Homer his service dog. He constantly has something in his hand, twirling it or smooshing it. And Homer is ready for pets when he gets overly stressed out.Sheilahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16088648997897145149noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3234546235408939294.post-47720782391765930722019-08-09T10:42:00.001-07:002019-08-09T10:42:39.388-07:00Seventh Grade Literature Guide Set - Memoria Press ~ REVIEW

As a big reading family, you can always find us with a book in our hands. We used to do more read alouds as a family, but as the kiddos have grown up, moved out and it's now just Kaden and I... he tends to read alone more. That said I do like to try to have a book going that we can read together a few times a week, or at least one we discus. One of the ways we slip this time together in our schedule is by using the Seventh Grade Literature Guide Set from Memoria Press.
A wonderfully c-l-e-a-n classroom table is a Beautiful sight. It was a beautiful sight while it lasted. Now it's covered with art projects, vocabulary words, the Bible a few readers, pencils, markers, a planner, 3 cups and a pack of paper clips . And I couldn't be happier....this is going to be our Best year. This year our Family is Stronger, Happier and Healthier. With this new peace I have room to breathe and my mind is clear to concentrate on my kids and still have strength to do all the other things I need to do each day.
One of my all time favorite companies to review products from is Apologia. And this time I get to share with you the newest addition to their amazing award-winning line of homeschool science curriculum, Exploring Creation with General Science, 3rd Edition. This specific course was designed to help middle
school students transition in their homeschool work from the elementary
level to seventh grade. Even though Kaden is a little behind overall in his school he is very much ahead of the game when it comes to Math and Science, so I knew this would be a perfect fit for us.
He has already completed all of their Elementary courses and we were actually going to start on the this specific course next year after our year in the rv. But, as soon as I saw they had this new edition I jumped on it and Kaden is really happy I did. Let me share more about the course, what we love about it, how we used it and how to connect with Apologia today.
Just a little update on schooling Kaden...wow has things changed. I'm impressed with his willingness to compromise and actually do his work. Right now we are only doing a few hours a day. But, I figure that's better then nothing. Honestly what does he truly need to know in life?
I make sure he reads some really good books, biographys, classics and wholesome stories filled with struggles, hard work and values. Of course he also reads other books too, it's all about balance. We are also working through some left and right brain puzzle books, vocabulary words and whatever review items I'm doing at the moment. Oh and chess, checkers or other logic/strategy game.
Since we will be moving in the rv soon I have tons of books and work that we will work through in 2 huge Rubbermaid bins. I told him this is the year we will catch up in all the areas we are behind in.
I truly believe something just finally clicked with him. It's like he has matured to a place that he has stopped fighting school time and sees it as a necessity or requirement. Before he would fight me so hard that it was too easy to just give in. It could also be that he is more stable and not melting down 10 times a day too. I have more mental strength because I'm not whittled down to the bone with stress.
School is looking good, finally we have a rhythm and it only took 7 years. :)Sheilahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16088648997897145149noreply@blogger.com0
